After a successful election during the 70th Regular Session of the IAEA General Conference in Vienna, Austria, former Oyo State Governor, Florence Ajimobi, has been appointed as Nigeria’s representative on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors. This appointment was confirmed by multiple sources including Tribune Online and TheCable.
According to Tribune Online, her appointment followed Nigeria’s election to the Board during the General Conference in Vienna. Meanwhile, TheCable reported that Ajimobi’s appointment signifies a significant step for Nigeria in the global nuclear energy sector.
It is worth noting that Florence Ajimobi is not the first Nigerian to hold this position. Previous Nigerian governors on the IAEA Board include Baba Gana Kingibe and Zainab Ahmed, who served between 2018 and 2023.
This appointment is expected to enhance Nigeria’s influence in global nuclear energy policies and strengthen its commitment to safe, secure, and peaceful uses of atomic energy.
