Gouging Property Prices Through Brokerage: Middlemen’s Tactics Uncovered

In a shocking revelation, The Guardian Nigeria News has uncovered a sinister practice in the real estate sector. Middlemen are exploiting their position as brokers to artificially inflate property prices, leaving many homebuyers and renters feeling the pinch. According to the report, these middlemen manipulate the market by overcharging for properties, pocketing the excess while providing little or no added value to the transaction.

‘It is a well-known secret in the real estate industry that middlemen often inflate property prices for their own benefit,’ said Bisi Adeyemi, a Lagos-based real estate agent who spoke with The Guardian Nigeria News. ‘This practice has been going on for years and it is high time we put an end to it.’

The National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) has not commented on the issue, but Adeyemi believes that regulating the industry could help curb such practices. ‘There needs to be stricter regulations in place to ensure that brokers are held accountable for their actions,’ he added.

The Guardian Nigeria News’ investigation comes as rising property prices have become a major concern for many Nigerians, with the average cost of housing increasing by over 30% in the past year alone. With such high costs, it is becoming increasingly difficult for young people and low-income families to afford homes.

‘This practice by middlemen only serves to widen the gap between the rich and the poor,’ said Adeola Olaniyi, a housing activist who has been advocating for more affordable housing in Nigeria. ‘We need to take urgent action to address this issue before it gets out of hand.’
