Independent Panel Uncovers Causes of Niger Miners’ Deaths: Overcrowding and Extreme Heat

An independent ministerial committee, set up to investigate the tragic deaths of 33 miners in the custody of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna, Niger State, has revealed the causes of the fatalities. According to the panel’s chairman, Jonathan Kure, the deaths were due to overcrowding and extreme heat. The panel’s report, presented to the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, stated that the miners were kept in a severely overcrowded cell that aggravated heat stress and dehydration, ultimately leading to environmental asphyxia and the miners’ deaths. The probe panel’s findings corroborate those of Vanguard News, which reported that the miners died due to overcrowding, extreme heat, and dehydration. The tragic incident has raised concerns about the conditions in which suspects are held in Nigerian detention facilities, and the need for improved safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. Nigerians are calling for accountability and justice for the victims and their families.
