The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared that it has no preferred candidate or political party for the 2027 general elections, pledging to uphold the rule of law and the will of Nigerian voters. According to a report by Vanguard News, the electoral commission made this known in a statement, assuring citizens that they will remain impartial throughout the election process.
The statement comes amidst rumors and political maneuvering ahead of the 2027 elections. The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has stated that its presidential candidate, Sandy Onor, remains in the race despite the party’s decision to support President Bola Tinubu under a cross-party political arrangement known as the Rainbow Coalition (Premium Times Nigeria).
In a related development, the National Vice Chairman (South-West) of the Labour Party (LP), Dr Arabambi Abayomi, and the Action Alliance (AA) governorship candidate in Ogun State, Prof. Awofala Awolora Awoniyi, have written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over moves to tamper with the membership register of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 governorship elections (Tribune Online).
The INEC’s commitment to neutrality is crucial in maintaining the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic process. As the 2027 elections approach, it is essential for all political parties and candidates to adhere to the principles of fairness and transparency to ensure a free and fair electoral process.
