The International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) has stepped up its efforts against cybercrime in Nigeria, with the arrest of two suspects as part of a global crackdown. One of the arrested individuals is reportedly linked to a phishing scheme that harvested over 2.1 million email addresses.
According to Punch Newspapers, the arrests are part of Operation Pangea XV, an annual operation targeting the sale of illicit goods online. The operation has seen over 150 suspects arrested and the seizure of millions of dollars worth of counterfeit medicines, among other items, across the world.
The Nigerian Cybercrime Section of INTERPOL is working closely with the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to investigate the case further. The arrests come amid growing concerns over cybercrime in Nigeria, particularly in the areas of phishing, email scams, and identity theft.
These arrests serve as a reminder to Nigerians about the importance of internet safety. As more and more transactions move online, it is crucial to protect personal information and be vigilant against scams and fraud.
This is a developing story, and more details are expected to emerge as the investigation continues.
