In a bid to curb election-related activities abroad and ensure focus on local campaigns, the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has imposed a travel ban on its candidates until after the 2027 general elections. This directive was issued during the inauguration of the APC Tinubu-Hamzat Campaign Council at the party secretariat in Ikeja, Lagos, according to multiple sources.
The ban comes as part of measures aimed at ensuring that candidates maintain a strong local presence and avoid any potential distractions or controversies that might arise from foreign travels. The state chairman of the party, Cornelius Ojelabi, made this known during the inauguration ceremony. However, the exact dates when the travel restriction takes effect and ends are yet to be announced by the APC.
This development follows a similar move by the federal government earlier this year, banning political appointees from traveling abroad without prior permission. The travel ban on candidates is expected to further strengthen the party’s resolve to tackle vote-buying and other electoral malpractices that have marred previous elections in Nigeria.
According to Daily Post Nigeria, the campaign council was inaugurated with a call for unity and a commitment to work tirelessly towards the success of the APC in the upcoming polls. It is unclear if this travel ban extends to all candidates or only those running for state and national positions.
