Lagos Expands CNG Infrastructure to Ease Fuel Queues
The Lagos State Government plans to establish 19 new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations by Q1 2027 to improve access and reduce fuel queues.

In an effort to alleviate the persistent fuel queues plaguing Lagos, the Lagos State Government has announced plans to expand its Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) refuelling infrastructure to 19 stations by the first quarter of 2027, according to Punch Newspapers. This move is part of the state’s broader strategy to improve access to alternative fuel sources and reduce reliance on petrol. With growing concerns over fuel scarcity and the accompanying traffic congestion, the expansion of CNG stations is expected to provide much-needed relief for residents and commuters in Lagos.
According to Punch Newspapers, the Lagos State Government is collaborating with private sector partners to ensure the successful implementation of this project. However, it remains unclear which companies have been selected for this partnership. The state government has not provided a timeline for when construction will begin or when the first station will open.
This initiative follows a similar move by the Federal Government, which aims to convert 50,000 vehicles to CNG by 2025. If successful, the expansion of CNG stations in Lagos could serve as a model for other states in Nigeria looking to address fuel shortages and traffic congestion.
