In a bid to improve police accountability in Lagos, the Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, has issued a stern warning to officers under his command, prohibiting brutal tactics, extortion, and online misconduct. The warning comes after increasing reports of police misconduct and a growing call for accountability from citizens.
According to the Independent Newspaper Nigeria, Odumosu made it clear that such actions would not be tolerated and officers found guilty would face severe consequences.
‘The Lagos State Police Command has zero tolerance for police brutality, extortion, and any form of misconduct. Any officer found guilty of such acts will be dealt with severely,’ Odumosu said.
The warning comes after several high-profile incidents of police brutality in Lagos, leading to public outcry and demands for change. Odumosu’s stance is a step towards addressing these concerns and improving the image of the police force in Lagos.
In addition to the warning against brutality and extortion, Odumosu also addressed online misconduct, urging officers to be professional and respectful in their online interactions with the public.
‘Police officers are public servants, and as such, must conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the highest standards of professionalism, even online,’ Odumosu added.
The Commissioner of Police’s warning is a positive step towards promoting accountability and improving the relationship between the police and the public in Lagos. However, it remains to be seen how the warning will be enforced and whether it will lead to a significant reduction in incidents of police misconduct.
