In a move aimed at promoting sustainable energy use, the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has called on the Federal Government to provide tax incentives and affordable financing to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) seeking to adopt cleaner energy sources. According to a report by Punch Newspapers, the LCCI believes that such measures would significantly reduce the cost of transitioning to cleaner energy for SMEs, thereby driving wider adoption. The LCCI’s push for clean energy incentives comes as part of a broader effort to combat climate change and promote sustainable development in Nigeria. The Federal Government has set a target of achieving 30% renewable energy penetration by 2030, and initiatives like the LCCI’s are crucial in helping to reach this goal. While the government has yet to respond to the LCCI’s request, similar incentives have been successful in other countries, such as India and China, where they have helped to drive the adoption of clean energy technologies among SMEs. The LCCI’s call for action underscores the need for a coordinated and comprehensive approach to promoting clean energy in Nigeria, one that engages all stakeholders, including the private sector, in the effort to build a greener, more sustainable future for the country.
