In a move to appeal to the South-East voter base of former Vice President Peter Obi, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has urged the region to reject ethnic politics during the 2027 elections. Makinde made the call during a town hall meeting held in Enugu, the capital of Enugu State, according to Punch Newspapers. The governor, known for his political ambitions, emphasized the importance of focusing on issues rather than ethnicity when choosing a leader. This call comes as many Nigerians have expressed concerns about the growing influence of ethnic politics in the country’s elections. Makinde’s appeal could potentially win him support from the South-East, a region that has traditionally been a stronghold for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), but has also shown signs of shifting allegiances. The 2027 elections are expected to be highly competitive, with several key positions up for grabs, including the presidency. While it remains to be seen how this development will impact the political landscape, Makinde’s stance against ethnic politics could resonate with voters across Nigeria who are seeking a more issue-driven political process.
