Maritime Students Call for Easing of Certification Rules by NIMASA

The Maritime Students for Tinubu and Hamzat Movement (MSTM) has called on the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to ease the recently introduced certification rules, citing the potential financial strain and difficulties faced by seafarers. According to the Vanguard News, the movement is advocating for transitional arrangements and financial relief to assist those affected by the new regulations. The call comes as part of a three-month statewide engagement aimed at promoting maritime education and development in Nigeria.

The MSTM believes that the new certification rules could impose excessive burdens on seafarers, particularly those who are already struggling financially. They argue that NIMASA should consider their concerns and take steps to alleviate the pressure on these individuals. The movement’s efforts highlight the importance of addressing the needs of Nigeria’s maritime sector, an industry with significant potential for growth and job creation.

According to Vanguard News, the MSTM has been active in advocating for maritime education and development in Nigeria. The organization, which supports the governorship aspirations of Bola Tinubu and Babajide Sanwo-Olum of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos, has been working to promote maritime education and development through various initiatives. The call for NIMASA to ease the certification rules is the latest in a series of actions aimed at advancing the maritime sector in Nigeria.

It remains to be seen whether NIMASA will respond to the MSTM’s call for action. The agency has not yet commented on the matter, and it is unclear when the facility began operating under the new certification rules. According to Vanguard News, the MSTM’s three-month statewide engagement will continue as the movement works to raise awareness and advocate for the needs of Nigeria’s maritime sector.
