After 34 long years, the Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development in Abuja, Nigeria, has finally received a wheelchair ramp, providing much-needed accessibility for persons with disabilities. The Centre, established in 1992, has long been inaccessible to this community, but recent changes have finally made it possible for everyone to visit and engage in the Centre’s activities. According to THISDAYLIVE, the new ramp was installed earlier this month, marking a significant milestone for the Centre and its commitment to inclusivity. The ICIR reported that the Centre’s accessibility upgrade is part of a larger push for disability inclusion in the Nigerian capital. While the Centre’s new accessibility is a step in the right direction, it is essential to remember that much more needs to be done to ensure that all public spaces in Nigeria are accessible to people with disabilities. The Centre’s accessibility upgrade is a positive step forward, but it is crucial to continue pushing for change to create a more inclusive society for all Nigerians.
