Nigeria has witnessed a series of unfortunate incidents involving military aircraft crashes in recent times, the latest being the crash near Igbokoda, Ondo State, which claimed the lives of several service personnel. This tragedy raises concerns about the safety and maintenance of our armed forces’ aircraft, leaving many wondering why such accidents occur so frequently.
Etim Etim, a journalist at THISDAYLIVE, penned an article arguing that military aircraft should be properly maintained to prevent these crashes. According to his piece, the frequency of air crashes involving Nigeria’s military aircraft and helicopters in the last few decades is alarming and demands immediate attention from our military authorities.
In a statement, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) expressed profound sorrow over the crash and called for a thorough, professional, and transparent investigation. The association extended its condolences to the families of the deceased service members, the Nigerian Air Force, and the broader Armed Forces of Nigeria.
A government official explained that the plane plunged right to the bottom of the river, making it difficult for local divers to properly locate it. This underscores the complexity of rescue operations following military aircraft crashes in Nigeria.
The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Olumuyiwa Enitan Abel, expressed condolences to the families, colleagues, and loved ones of the Nigerian Air Force personnel who lost their lives. In a bid to honor the fallen heroes, the Federal Government has declared a three-day period of mourning, with national flags and other official symbols to be flown at half-mast.
The frequency of military aircraft crashes in Nigeria is a cause for concern. It is crucial that our military authorities address this issue to ensure the safety of our service personnel and prevent further tragedies.
