Minister Defends NNPC Petrol Discount: Not a Return to Subsidy

In a press conference on Tuesday, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, addressed concerns that the Nigerian National Petrol Corporation’s (NNPC) recent decision to offer a discount on petrol might signal a return to fuel subsidy. According to Premium Times Nigeria, Sylva explained that the NNPC had opted to forgo some of its profits to cushion the impact of higher petrol prices on consumers. ‘This is not a return to subsidy,’ Sylva asserted, emphasizing that the move was aimed at maintaining affordability for consumers during the economic challenges of the ongoing global crisis.

Sylva’s statement comes as the NNPC faces increased scrutiny over its operations and pricing policies. The corporation has not said when the facility began operating, and it remains unclear how long the discount will last. Some critics argue that such measures only prolong the problem, as they postpone the necessary structural reforms needed to address the root causes of Nigeria’s fuel supply issues.

However, Sylva contends that the discount is a necessary response to the current crisis, stating that ‘the government is doing everything within its power to ensure the continued availability of petrol at an affordable price.’ The minister’s defense is likely to be met with mixed reactions, as opinions on the NNPC’s role in the fuel market remain divided.
