NASHGODAN Urges Federal Government to Establish Community-Based Feed Banks for Livestock Farmers

The National Sheep and Goat Development Association of Nigeria (NASHGODAN) has called on the Federal Government to establish community-based feed banks nationwide to provide livestock farmers with affordable, quality feed.

In a recent interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, the National President of the National Sheep and Goat Development Association of Nigeria (NASHGODAN), Abdullateef Ahmed, emphasized the need for community-based feed banks to address the challenges faced by livestock farmers in Nigeria. According to Tribune Online, Ahmed noted that these feed banks would provide livestock farmers with affordable, quality, and readily available animal feed, thereby boosting livestock production and ensuring food security.

This call by NASHGODAN comes at a time when the Nigerian livestock sector is grappling with several issues, including high costs of feed and the unavailability of quality feed, which are major obstacles to the growth and development of the sector. The association’s call for community-based feed banks is aimed at addressing these challenges and promoting sustainable livestock farming in the country.

The establishment of community-based feed banks could have far-reaching implications for the Nigerian livestock sector. It could help reduce the cost of feed, ensure quality feed, and make feed more accessible to farmers, thereby improving their productivity and profitability. This, in turn, could contribute to food security and economic growth in Nigeria.

It remains unclear whether the Federal Government will heed the call of NASHGODAN and establish community-based feed banks nationwide. The NNPC has not said when the facility began operating, and the government has not issued a formal response to the association’s call. However, the call by NASHGODAN highlights the need for urgent action to address the challenges facing the Nigerian livestock sector and ensure sustainable growth and development in the sector.
