NDC and OK Movement at odds over campaign council

A brewing crisis within the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) is casting a shadow over the party’s preparations for the 2027 general elections, according to reports. The dispute stems from a disagreement between the NDC’s National Chairman, Senator Cleopas Moses, and the OK Movement, led by former governor Rabiu Kwankwaso and ex-Vice President Peter Obi, over the latter’s role and independence within the party’s campaign council.

According to Tribune Online, tensions have arisen over the degree of autonomy the OK Movement should enjoy in its campaign activities. The NDC reportedly seeks a closer alignment between the movement and the party, while the OK Movement maintains its independence from sponsorship by individuals or political office holders.

In response to the NDC’s requests for validation and coordination, the OK Movement has asserted its grassroots origins and self-reliance. In an interview with Vanguard News, a spokesperson for the movement said: ‘We were established from the grassroots, and we do not depend on sponsorship from any individual or political office holder for our activities.’

This development comes as both parties gear up for the upcoming elections, with Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso being touted as potential presidential candidates. The exact implications of this dispute on the party’s electoral prospects remain unclear.
