Can Nigeria Become Africa’s Rice Export Hub? NGF Offers Optimistic Outlook
The Director-General of the Nigeria Governors' Forum (NGF), Dr. Abdulateef Shittu, has expressed optimism that Nigeria can emerge as a net exporter of rice across Africa, given its agricultural potential.

In a recent development, the Director-General of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), Dr. Abdulateef Shittu, has expressed optimism that Nigeria can emerge as a net exporter of rice across Africa. According to a report by Vanguard News and Tribune Online, Shittu highlighted the country’s human, financial, and natural endowments as key factors that can propel Nigeria towards food sovereignty.
The NGF Director-General made these statements during a forum discussion, where he emphasized that Nigeria currently produces 3.3 million metric tonnes of rice, against a consumption rate of 8.6 million metric tonnes. However, Shittu believes that with the right policies and investments, Nigeria can bridge this gap and start exporting rice to other African countries.
While Nigeria’s agricultural potential has been a topic of discussion for some time, it is noteworthy that the country has been struggling with food insecurity due to several factors, including climate change, inadequate infrastructure, and lack of funding.
However, Shittu’s optimism reflects a growing interest among Nigerian policymakers to address these challenges and create a more sustainable food system. As Nigeria continues to grapple with food security issues, the potential for becoming a rice exporter across Africa could offer a promising solution for both domestic food security and economic growth.
