Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala: $2.4bn Fuel Subsidy Fraud Probe Led to Mother’s Kidnap

According to ThisDayLive, Okonjo-Iweala made the disclosure during a lecture at the University of Lagos. She revealed that her mother was kidnapped in 2007 when she was serving as the Finance Minister under former President Umaru Yar’Adua’s administration. The kidnap occurred amidst an investigation into a $2.4 billion fuel subsidy fraud. Vanguard News corroborates the report, quoting Okonjo-Iweala as saying that her father’s reaction at the time was, ‘We don’t give in to blackmail. And he said, you’ve got to carry on. You’ve got to go to work.’ This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks public officials face in the line of duty, particularly when dealing with sensitive matters of national interest such as corruption and fraud.
