The Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX) is making a push for Nigerian investors to own a significant stake in the upcoming Initial Public Offering (IPO) of fintech giant, OPay. According to reports from Tribune Online, the NGX Group is seeking to widen domestic ownership of Nigeria-focused technology businesses, starting with OPay’s IPO. While the exact date for the IPO has yet to be announced, the move is seen as a strategic move by the NGX to increase local participation in the technology sector. The fintech industry has been growing rapidly in Nigeria, with companies like OPay, Flutterwave, and KwikCash leading the charge. As these companies continue to scale, the potential for local investment and ownership becomes increasingly important. By encouraging Nigerian investors to own a stake in these companies, the NGX aims to foster a stronger, more sustainable local technology ecosystem. The push for local investment is not without precedent. In 2021, the NGX successfully led the listing of fintech company, Quickteller, on the Nigerian Exchange. The listing was a success, and it is hoped that the OPay IPO will follow suit. While the details of OPay’s IPO are yet to be finalized, the NGX’s push for local investment is a positive sign for the future of the Nigerian technology sector.
