Nigeria Cannot Afford to Waste Reform Momentum – NESG

The Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) has warned that Nigeria must ensure ongoing economic reforms translate into productive investment, jobs and improved income levels.

In a statement released on Thursday, the group said it was essential for the government to sustain the momentum of reforms started in recent years, as the country cannot afford to lose the gains made.

According to Punch Newspapers, the NESG highlighted the need for increased investment in critical sectors such as infrastructure, agriculture and manufacturing, to drive economic growth and job creation.

The group also emphasized the importance of addressing corruption and improving the business environment to attract foreign investments.

The statement comes amidst calls for reforms by various stakeholders, including the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank and the African Development Bank.

While the NESG’s warning is a call to action for the government, it also serves as a reminder to Nigerians that the reforms must deliver tangible benefits to the people.

According to the latest data from the National Bureau of Statistics, Nigeria’s unemployment rate stood at 33.3% in the second quarter of 2026, a significant increase from the previous quarter’s rate of 31.1%.

In a statement, the NESG said: ‘Nigeria cannot afford to waste the reform momentum, as the country needs to focus on job creation, poverty reduction and inclusive growth.’

The group’s warning is a wake-up call for the government to deliver on its promises and ensure that the ongoing reforms result in real improvements in the lives of Nigerians.
