At the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Armenia, Nigeria and France have spearheaded an appeal for stronger political leadership, increased financing, and collective action to accelerate the implementation of the global target to protect 30% of the world’s land and seas by 2030, according to Premium Times Nigeria.
The call was made during the Target 3 Action Day at CBD COP17, which aims to mobilize urgent action towards achieving the biodiversity targets. The 30×30 target, also known as the ‘30% for nature’ initiative, aims to conserve at least 30% of the planet’s land and seas to address the escalating biodiversity and climate crises. This target was first proposed at the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15) in 2020 in China.
Nigeria and France are urging global leaders to work together to scale up efforts to protect nature and halt its devastating loss, particularly in Africa. Africa is home to over 50% of the planet’s remaining biodiversity hotspots but is also experiencing some of the highest rates of habitat loss and species extinction.
The 30×30 target is crucial for the survival of countless species, the preservation of critical ecosystems, and the promotion of sustainable development. The accelerated implementation of this target can help mitigate the impacts of climate change, promote food security, and enhance the livelihoods of millions of people, especially in Africa. As Nigeria and France emphasize, now is the time for decisive action to protect the planet’s biodiversity before it’s too late.
