Nigeria Pursues Acquisition of 12 US Attack Helicopters

The Nigerian military has reportedly initiated a move to purchase 12 attack helicopters from the United States, according to sources at the US Mission in Nigeria and Business Insider Africa. The deal, if successful, would strengthen the growing security partnership between both nations. According to Premium Times Nigeria, details about the planned acquisition were revealed on Tuesday, though the US Mission has not yet disclosed the model of helicopters or when the facility began operating. The announcement comes at a time when the Nigerian government is grappling with escalating insecurity across various regions, making the acquisition a significant step towards bolstering Nigeria’s air-combat capabilities.

The exact models and specifications of the helicopters have not been disclosed, though Business Insider Africa referred to them as Viper attack helicopters. It is not yet known whether this indicates the Nigerian government will acquire AH-64 Apache or AH-1 Cobra helicopters, which are both models produced by Bell Textron Inc., a leading manufacturer of military aircraft.

The acquisition comes amidst growing concerns over insecurity in Nigeria, with various regions experiencing attacks from terrorist groups and bandits. The Nigerian government has faced criticism for its handling of the security situation, and this move is likely aimed at addressing these challenges more effectively.

This development serves as a testament to the increasing collaboration between the United States and Nigeria on matters of national security. According to Premium Times Nigeria, the US Mission in Nigeria said that the planned acquisition demonstrated the growing security partnership between both countries.
