Vice-President Kashim Shettima will spearhead Nigeria’s renewed push for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council during the country’s engagements at the 76th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81), according to reports from both radionigeria.gov.ng and Vanguard News. The campaign seeks to address the underrepresentation of Africa in the council, which has 15 members with five permanent seats—the United States, China, France, Russia, and the United Kingdom. This renewed effort comes as Nigeria continues to play a significant role in regional and international peacekeeping missions.
The UN General Assembly convenes annually to discuss global issues and approve resolutions on topics such as peacekeeping, disarmament, human rights, economic development, and climate change. The Nigerian delegation will present its case for a permanent seat at the security council during this year’s assembly, set to take place in New York from September 20th to October 1st.
