Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United Mexican States, Pastor Obiageli Omokri, has expressed a desire to strengthen trade ties between Nigeria and Mexico, with a focus on the export of Nigerian refined petroleum and fertiliser to the Latin American country. According to reports in THISDAYLIVE, Ambassador Omokri plans to organize a tour of the Dangote Refinery in Lagos for Mexican officials. The tour is intended to showcase the capacity of the refinery, Nigeria’s largest, and potentially open up new opportunities for cooperation between the two countries. Speaking on the matter, Ambassador Omokri emphasized the importance of the relationship between Nigeria and Mexico, citing the potential for collaboration in various sectors, including agriculture, manufacturing, and energy. Senator Godswill Akpabio, the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, has pledged the support of the National Assembly in driving this initiative forward, according to the report.
The Dangote Refinery, located in Lagos, is the largest refinery in Nigeria and one of the largest in Africa. With a refining capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, it is a significant player in the global oil industry. The refinery began operations in 2023, marking a major milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to reduce its reliance on imported refined petroleum products.
This move to target the Mexican market for Nigerian refined petroleum and fertiliser is part of Nigeria’s broader strategy to diversify its export markets and increase its revenue from non-oil sectors. As the African continent’s largest oil producer, Nigeria has faced challenges in recent years due to fluctuating global oil prices and a heavy dependence on oil revenues.
For Nigerian readers, this development is significant as it represents a potential opportunity for economic growth and diversification. The success of such initiatives could help to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on oil exports and contribute to a more resilient and sustainable economy. The potential for collaboration with Mexico, a major player in the global economy, could offer numerous benefits for both countries.
