Curbing the Reckless Menace of Convoys and Unlicensed Private Jets in Nigeria

Two recent incidents involving reckless convoys and unlicensed private jets highlight the urgent need for action in Nigeria.

The dangerous culture of reckless convoys in Nigeria has once again made headlines, this time after a convoy of officials was responsible for the death of four students from the Federal University of Technology (FUT) Minna. This tragic incident, like many before it, has sparked calls for action against this menace that is becoming all too common in Nigeria.

A recent report by Punch Newspapers revealed that an ex-NCAA official has called for stricter enforcement against illegal private jet charter operations in Nigeria. This comes after an incident where an unlicensed private jet reportedly flew dangerously close to a commercial plane, posing a serious safety risk.

Both incidents highlight the urgent need for action against these menaces that are not only putting lives at risk, but also undermining the integrity of Nigeria’s institutions.

In the case of the convoys, it is clear that the culture of impunity is enabling these dangerous practices. The FUT Minna incident is not an isolated incident, with several other instances reported where convoys have caused accidents and deaths.

The unlicensed private jet charter operations pose a similar threat, with safety regulations often ignored in the pursuit of profit. This not only puts lives at risk, but also results in a significant loss of revenue for the government.

It is time for action. The Nigerian government must take a firm stance against these dangerous practices and ensure that the rule of law is upheld. This includes stricter enforcement of traffic regulations for convoys, as well as tougher penalties for those who flout the rules.

In the case of private jets, the NCAA must ensure that all operations are licensed and adhering to safety regulations. This will not only make the skies safer for all, but also help to stem the revenue loss that results from illegal operations.

It is time for a change. The dangerous culture of reckless convoys and unlicensed private jet charter operations must be stopped. Nigerian lives are at stake.
