Nigerian Institutions Warn of Insecurity Fueled by Irresponsible Social Media Use

In a joint statement, the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have warned that the irresponsible use of social media and the spread of misinformation are fueling insecurity in Nigeria. According to THISDAYLIVE, this comes as a result of the growing reliance on social media for news and information, which has led to an increase in the dissemination of false information and hate speech. Read more on THISDAYLIVE. The concerns raised by NIPR and NSCDC echo those of other Nigerian institutions, such as the National Orientation Agency (NOA), which have also called for greater responsibility in the use of social media to combat fake news and hate speech. As Nigeria prepares for its general elections next year, the issue of misinformation on social media is a growing concern, with many fearing it could lead to violence and undermine democracy.
