Peter Obi Challenges Tinubu on Subsidy Savings and Loans
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has challenged President Bola Tinubu to account for the N15.8tn reportedly saved from petrol subsidy removal and over $100bn in loans.

In a recent challenge to President Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has urged the incumbent to explain how over N15.8tn in subsidy savings and over $100bn in loans have been managed during his tenure. This call comes after the federal government’s decision to remove fuel subsidies, a move that reportedly saved the government N5.8tn. However, the details of how these savings have been utilised remain unclear, prompting Obi’s call for transparency. ‘President Tinubu must tell Nigerians what has happened to these funds’, Obi stated during a campaign rally in Abuja. The NDC candidate also urged Tinubu to visit all 33 states of Nigeria to provide accountability for the loans taken during his administration. This challenge is the latest in a series of debates between the two presidential candidates, as they gear up for the 2027 elections. According to Punch Newspapers, Obi made this call during a campaign rally in Abuja on Monday, 8th November. It is not yet clear if Tinubu has responded to Obi’s challenge.
