Ogaga Ifowodo Wins 2026 Nigeria Prize for Literature

Nigerian poet Ogaga Ifowodo has emerged as the winner of the prestigious 2026 Nigeria Prize for Literature, according to Punch Newspapers. The $100,000 prize money was awarded for his thought-provoking poetry collection, ‘Why Does God Need a Gun?’. This marks the seventh time the prize has been awarded since its inception in 2004. Ifowodo, who hails from Delta State, has been a prominent figure in Nigeria’s literary scene for several years, with his works often grappling with issues of faith, morality, and the human condition. ‘Why Does God Need a Gun?’, published in 2023, has been lauded for its poignant exploration of these themes, particularly in the context of Nigeria’s complex social and political landscape. The Nigeria Prize for Literature, often referred to as Africa’s Nobel Prize for Literature, is an annual literary award given to a published book of fiction written by a Nigerian author. According to Punch Newspapers, the winners are selected by an independent panel of judges who are experts in literature and literature-related industries. In a statement, the panel praised Ifowodo’s ‘exceptional narrative prowess and profound exploration of moral and societal issues’. This latest win adds to Ifowodo’s impressive literary accolades, which include the NLNG Nigeria Prize for Literature’s inaugural prize in 2005 and the Caine Prize for African Writing in 2019. The win is a testament to the rich literary talent that exists within Nigeria and the continent as a whole.
