Former spokesman for Peter Obi’s presidential campaign, Kenneth Okonkwo, has retracted his stance on Obi’s Anambra debt record, according to reports in Punch Newspapers and Tribune Online. Okonkwo admitted that he was misled when he previously defended Obi against claims of a high debt burden in Anambra State.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Okonkwo said he had been provided with new information that showed the actual state of Anambra’s finances during Obi’s tenure. He apologized for any confusion caused and pledged to correct his previous statements.
Okonkwo served as spokesman for Obi’s campaign from 2023 until earlier this year, when he left to focus on his legal practice. His reversal on the debt issue could have implications for Obi’s campaign, which has emphasized fiscal responsibility and economic growth.
According to Punch Newspapers, Okonkwo’s retraction comes as Anambra State faces scrutiny over its finances following the departure of former governor Willie Obiano. The new administration, led by Charles Soludo, has promised to prioritize transparency and accountability in governance.
