A new report by THISDAYLIVE indicates that digital financial services in Nigeria have made significant strides in financial inclusion. According to the report, digital finance reached 64.4% of Nigerian adults in 2026, a significant increase from 2025’s 58.8%. This development has also led to a decrease in the proportion of financially excluded Nigerians, which fell to 21% from 26%.
The report attributes this progress to the efforts of various digital financial service providers, with OPay emerging as a key player. OPay, a mobile money platform, has been instrumental in providing affordable and accessible financial services to millions of Nigerians, particularly those in rural areas and lower-income brackets.
This development is significant for Nigeria’s economic growth and financial stability. By increasing financial inclusion, more Nigerians will have access to essential financial services such as savings, loans, and insurance. This will not only empower individuals but also stimulate economic activity and foster entrepreneurship.
It is important to note that while the report indicates a positive trend, there are still significant challenges to overcome. According to the Central Bank of Nigeria, an estimated 36.8 million Nigerians, or 31.6% of the adult population, are still unbanked. Furthermore, the report emphasizes the need for continued efforts to address issues such as data privacy, security, and financial literacy to ensure sustainable growth in digital financial services.
In conclusion, the strides made by digital financial services, particularly OPay, in increasing financial inclusion in Nigeria are commendable. However, there is still a significant portion of the population that remains unbanked, highlighting the need for continued efforts to address these challenges.
