In a heartfelt message, Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, celebrated the 86th birthday of Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe (retd.), the former Deputy National Security Adviser and Chief of Defence Staff. According to a report by Premium Times Nigeria, Otti recalled how Ukiwe resigned his exalted position as the number two citizen of the country to uphold his principles and reputation, describing him as a rare gem who should be referenced as a great example to the present generation of politicians and public office holders. Ukiwe, who was born on October 26, 1935, served as the Chief of Defence Staff from 1993 to 1994, during the military regime of General Sani Abacha. His resignation in 1994 is considered a significant act of defiance against the regime, demonstrating his commitment to democratic principles. Otti’s call for Nigeria to recognise Ukiwe’s contributions comes at a time when the country is grappling with issues of political integrity and accountability. As the nation prepares for future elections, the legacy of Ukiwe, who embodies the spirit of principled leadership, serves as an inspiration for Nigerian politicians and citizens alike.
