In a recent development, the Pan Niger Delta Elders Forum (PANDEF) has demanded that the Federal Government increases the derivation allocation to oil-producing states in the Niger Delta region. According to a report by Vanguard News, the group cited environmental degradation and developmental challenges as reasons for this demand.
Speaking on the matter, PANDEF, led by Elder Edwin Clark, stated that the current minimum of 13% derivation allocation is inadequate, and a fairer share of 50% is necessary to address the issues plaguing the region.
The call by PANDEF comes as the Niger Delta continues to grapple with environmental degradation and underdevelopment, despite being a major contributor to Nigeria’s oil revenues. The region’s inhabitants have long complained about the lack of basic amenities and the negative impact of oil exploration on their livelihoods.
The Federal Government has not yet responded to PANDEF’s demand, but the call highlights the ongoing tension between the oil-producing states and the Federal Government over resource control.
