Policing for Personal Profit: Tragedy at Minna’s Artisanal Mines

Last week, the tragic death of 37 artisanal miners under the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (Civil Defence) in Minna has once again brought to light the structural violence against ordinary Nigerians perpetrated by the state itself.

According to Vanguard News, the circumstances surrounding the mass arrest and detention in unsafe conditions led to the deaths of the miners. The report did not specify the cause of death, but it is believed that the overcrowding and poor sanitation conditions may have contributed to the fatalities.

This incident raises concerns about the use of power by state security forces for personal gain rather than for the protection and safety of citizens. It is a clear violation of their duty to serve and protect the people.

The Nigerian government has not yet commented on this incident, but it highlights the need for better oversight and accountability of security forces in Nigeria. The tragic loss of life underscores the urgent need for reforms to ensure that such incidents do not happen again in the future.
