In an unexpected turn, a Federal Government probe panel examining the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners while in Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) custody in Minna, Niger State, has requested an additional two weeks to conclude its investigation. The extension is aimed at addressing identified institutional lapses and ensuring a thorough examination of the tragic incident.
According to reports from Tribune Online, Daily Post Nigeria, and Punch Newspapers, the chairman of the independent committee investigating the matter, Jonathan Kure, disclosed this in Abuja on Tuesday. The extension is expected to allow the panel to complete its work more comprehensively and deliver a robust report to the public.
The exact reason for the request has not been confirmed, but it is believed that the probe panel needs more time to fully examine the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate deaths and recommend measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
While the extension is being granted, it is crucial to note that the tragic incident has sparked nationwide outrage and calls for accountability. The Nigerian government must demonstrate its commitment to transparency and justice by ensuring a swift, thorough, and transparent investigation.
