Railway Retirees Urge Tinubu’s Intervention over Two Decades of Housing Policy Delay

Nigerian railway retirees have appealed to President Bola Tinubu for intervention in a 21-year delay in the implementation of a housing policy meant to provide them with affordable homes.

The Guardian Nigeria News reported on Tuesday that the Nigerian Union of Railway, Workers (NUR) has appealed to President Bola Tinubu for intervention in a 21-year delay in the implementation of a housing policy meant to provide them with affordable homes. According to the report, the union’s General Secretary, Segun Esan, lamented that the policy, which was approved in 1995, has yet to be implemented, leaving many retirees without decent housing. The union’s plea comes after President Tinubu’s inauguration on May 29, 2026. Esan is quoted as saying, ‘We are appealing to President Tinubu to help us actualize the policy as promised by previous administrations.’ The report noted that the housing policy was initially intended to provide 3,000 homes for railway workers and retirees. The union’s call for intervention highlights the plight of Nigeria’s railway retirees, many of whom face significant challenges in securing adequate housing in their twilight years. The delay in implementing the housing policy is not unique to this administration, but the hope is that President Tinubu will take action to address the issue. The report did not indicate whether the President has responded to the union’s appeal.
