The House of Representatives has taken a significant step towards enhancing healthcare education in Nigeria by passing a bill for a second reading to establish a Federal College of Nursing and Midwifery in Ifako/Ijaiye, Lagos State. According to Punch Newspapers, the bill, which is now at the committee stage, is aimed at addressing the shortage of nurses and midwives in the country. The proposed college, if approved, would offer degree programs in nursing and midwifery, as well as other allied health sciences. This move is expected to boost healthcare services in Lagos State and potentially improve the overall healthcare landscape in Nigeria. The bill’s sponsor, Hon. Oluwatosin Oluwole, emphasized the need for such an institution to meet the growing demand for healthcare professionals in the region. It’s worth noting that Lagos State is Nigeria’s most populous and has a high concentration of healthcare facilities. The proposed college could play a pivotal role in equipping healthcare workers with the necessary skills to meet the state’s healthcare needs.
