Shettima Calls for $410 Billion Investment for Nigeria’s Net-Zero Pathway

Vice President Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has highlighted the crucial need for an extra investment of $410 billion to propel Nigeria towards attaining net-zero emissions by the year 2060. This call was made during the Nigerian Economic Summit (NES #27) held in Abuja on Friday, October 1st. According to reports from TheCable, Tinubu stated that this additional investment is necessary for the country to meet its commitments under the Paris Agreement and achieve its climate goals.

Tinubu’s comments come as part of a global push towards mitigating the effects of climate change and transitioning economies towards greener, more sustainable paths. The Vice President noted that the investment would be directed towards various sectors, including agriculture, manufacturing, power generation, and transportation, with a focus on renewable energy sources, energy efficiency, and electric vehicles.

The call for increased investment in Nigeria’s transition to net-zero emissions is not without precedent. In July 2021, the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) unveiled its Green Bond, a N50 billion initiative aimed at financing climate change mitigation projects across the country. However, Tinubu stressed that the current $410 billion investment figure represents only a fraction of what is actually required to achieve Nigeria’s net-zero goals.

The Vice President’s call for significant financial backing highlights the urgent need for action on climate change in Nigeria. As the world continues to grapple with the effects of global warming, it becomes increasingly important for countries like Nigeria to prioritize sustainable development and invest in clean energy solutions.
