The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, has once again stirred controversy by criticising Peter Obi, the candidate of the Labour Party, over the Nigeria Democratic Congress’ (NDC) appointment of retired Major General John Enenche as its Director of Security and Intelligence. In a series of tweets, Sowore expressed his disapproval of Enenche’s appointment, citing the Lekki Toll Gate incident of 2020 as a point of contention.
According to Daily Post Nigeria, Sowore’s criticism of Enenche comes after the former military spokesman was named to the role in the NDC’s 2027 campaign. Sowore’s tweets, however, do not directly mention Enenche’s role in the NDC, but rather focus on the Lekki Toll Gate incident.
The Lekki Toll Gate incident, which occurred during the End SARS protests in October 2020, resulted in the deaths of several protesters and has been a subject of controversy and investigation ever since. Sowore, who was arrested and detained by the Nigerian government following his call for the #RevolutionNow protests in 2019, has been a vocal critic of the government’s handling of the incident.
Sowore’s criticism of Enenche and the Lekki Toll Gate incident is likely to reignite the controversy surrounding the incident and add another layer to the already heated political race in Nigeria.
According to Daily Post Nigeria, Sowore’s tweets have sparked a conversation on social media, with some supporting his stance and others criticising him for bringing up the Lekki Toll Gate incident in the context of the upcoming elections.
