President Bola Tinubu, the nation’s leader, has embarked on a religious journey, traveling to Makkah, Saudi Arabia to perform the Umrah. The news was confirmed by multiple sources, including Punch Newspapers and Vanguard News. According to Punch Newspapers, Tinubu departed Abuja on Friday afternoon and is expected to return next week. The Tribune Online reported that the President’s Special Adviser on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, clarified that Tinubu is not seeking medical treatment in Saudi Arabia, but rather performing the Umrah. This spiritual exercise, often referred to as a ‘lesser Hajj’, allows Muslims to visit the Kaaba, the holiest site in Islam, at any time of the year. The President’s religious journey comes amidst ongoing political and economic challenges in Nigeria, and some have seen it as a symbol of hope and unity for the nation.
According to the Vanguard News, the presidential aircraft, an Airbus A330-200, took off at 2:20pm local time. The post on Tribune Online, quoting Olusegun, further clarified that Tinubu is not seeking medical treatment in Saudi Arabia.
Tinubu’s decision to perform Umrah is a personal religious choice, but it has significant implications for the nation. As the first Nigerian President to perform Umrah while in office, Tinubu’s journey has sparked discussions about the role of religion in public life and the potential impact on Nigerian politics.
