Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, has addressed the latest controversy surrounding the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway. According to a report by Premium Times Nigeria, Umahi met with former Lagos governor and APC chieftain, Bola Tinubu, on Tuesday, 12th October, 2026. The meeting came in the wake of reports suggesting a presidential directive to reroute part of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway. This development has raised fresh questions about the project’s alignment. However, Umahi is reported to have maintained that work is progressing on the coastal highway. The governor, who is also the chairman of the South-South Governors’ Forum, did not explicitly comment on the presidential directive. The Lagos-Calabar coastal highway, when completed, is expected to be a major transport artery connecting the South-South and South-West regions of Nigeria. The project has been mired in controversy since its inception, with allegations of mismanagement and contractual disputes. The latest controversy comes after a report by Daily Trust on 8th October, 2026, suggesting that the Federal Government may have directed the rerouting of part of the highway through Osun and Oyo states instead of Ondo and Ekiti states. However, the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing has not confirmed these reports. The matter is of significant importance to Nigerian readers as the coastal highway is expected to boost economic activities in the South-South and South-West regions, and improve transportation infrastructure in the country.
