Deepening Pressure on Nigerian Businesses: Unpaid Bills by State Governments

An analysis by Business News Nigeria highlights the increasing strain on businesses due to unpaid bills by state governments.

An analysis by Business News Nigeria has revealed a growing pressure on Nigerian businesses due to unpaid bills from state governments. According to the report, these outstanding debts are causing cash flow issues for many businesses, threatening their survival. The analysis comes at a time when the Nigerian economy is grappling with various challenges, including high inflation and a weak naira. The situation has been described as ‘critical’ by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), which warned that it could have far-reaching implications for the country’s economic recovery. The unpaid bills, which range from taxes to supplier invoices, have reportedly accumulated to billions of naira in some states. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has not provided recent data on the issue, but a 2021 report showed that 26 out of 36 states owed a combined debt of N1.8 trillion to local suppliers. The report by Business News Nigeria also notes that the situation could worsen as the holiday season approaches, with businesses relying on payments from state governments to settle outstanding obligations and meet end-of-year targets. The development has raised concerns among industry stakeholders, who argue that it is essential for state governments to settle their debts promptly to support economic growth and job creation. The CBN has urged state governments to prioritize debt settlement to stimulate economic recovery and improve investor confidence.
