According to Vanguard News, the 22nd All Nigeria Editors Conference (ANEC) held in Enugu issued a timely warning that voters, not courts, should decide elections. The conference, themed ‘The Ballot, the Media and the Task of Keeping Democracy Alive’, also focused on detecting and debunking AI disinformation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Significantly, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was highlighted as a critical player in ensuring free and fair elections. The conference emphasized the importance of media’s role in informing and educating voters to make informed decisions during elections.
The warning from the ANEC comes at a time when Nigeria is grappling with various challenges to its democratic process, including vote-buying, voter intimidation, and political violence. The editors called on media houses to play an active role in exposing these practices and promoting transparency during elections.
The conference also addressed the growing issue of AI disinformation in Nigeria’s political landscape. With the increasing use of social media platforms in Nigerian politics, there is a need for media houses to be equipped with the necessary tools to detect and debunk such disinformation.
