In a recent development, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has challenged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to account for his role in the privatisation of Nigeria’s key assets. According to a report by THISDAYLIVE, Wike cited remarks made by former President Olusegun Obasanjo regarding Atiku’s integrity as a basis for his challenge.
In an apparent reference to Obasanjo’s criticisms, Wike is quoted as saying, ‘I challenge him (Atiku) to tell Nigerians what he did when he was in power. He should tell Nigerians what he did when he was privatising the power sector.’
Obasanjo, who was President from 1999 to 2007, has previously expressed reservations about Atiku’s integrity, alleging that he (Atiku) was involved in various corrupt practices during his tenure as Vice President.
This development comes at a time when Atiku is gearing up for the 2027 presidential elections, with the main opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), expected to nominate him as their candidate.
According to the report, Wike made these remarks at a town hall meeting in Abuja, but the exact date is not specified.
This story matters to Nigerian readers as it sheds light on the ongoing political discourse ahead of the 2027 elections. The allegations against Atiku’s role in privatisation and Obasanjo’s comments on his integrity could potentially impact Atiku’s campaign and public perception.
