The World Bank has issued a stern warning about a significant gap in Nigeria’s external accounts, amounting to a staggering $12.4 billion. According to a report in LEADERSHIP Newspapers, the international financial institution expressed concerns about the current state of Nigeria’s external accounts, highlighting the urgent need for action to address this substantial deficit. LEADERSHIP Newspapers reported that the World Bank’s concern stems from the current account deficit, which is projected to reach an alarming 4.3% of the country’s GDP this year. This deficit is expected to widen in the coming years, potentially leading to a significant outflow of foreign currency and putting pressure on the Nigerian Naira. The World Bank’s warning underscores the need for the Nigerian government to implement policy measures aimed at improving the country’s balance of payments and fostering economic stability. While the government has taken steps to address the external accounts deficit, including implementing import restrictions and increasing foreign exchange reserves, more action is needed to ensure a sustainable economic future for Nigeria.
