The Federal Government has evacuated another 105 Nigerians from South Africa following renewed concerns over xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks against Nigerians and other Africans in the country. According to reports, the returnees comprise 82 adults and 23 children. The latest evacuation was made possible through a $265,854 donation by the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) for the purchase of one-way tickets for 500 distressed Nigerians seeking to return home.
This is not the first time such an evacuation has taken place. Since the recent wave of xenophobia began in April, around 1,640 Nigerians have been evacuated from South Africa, with a batch of 33 being repatriated last month, according to Premium Times Nigeria.
The continued attacks on Nigerians in South Africa have sparked outrage and calls for action both within and outside the country. The South African government has repeatedly assured that it is committed to addressing the issue, but many Nigerians remain wary of its commitment.
