A survey by Yiaga Africa, a Nigerian civic organisation, reveals that 84% of Nigerians are willing to vote in the 2027 general elections, according to reports by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) and Premium Times Nigeria. However, only 41% of respondents are said to be committed to voting. The survey, which was conducted in September 2026, also indicated a decline in confidence in electoral institutions, with only 34% of respondents expressing confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the 2027 elections.
The findings of the survey come at a critical time, as Nigeria prepares for another round of elections in less than four years. The 2023 elections were marred by widespread allegations of voter intimidation, vote buying, and electoral malpractice.
The Yiaga survey, which was carried out across the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria, also highlighted the challenges of insecurity, distrust, and vote buying as threats to voter turnout. The organisation urged political parties to mobilise citizens to ensure they vote, despite these challenges.
According to Premium Times Nigeria, the survey was conducted through face-to-face interviews with a sample size of 2,400 respondents selected using a multi-stage stratified random sampling technique. The report also noted that the results of the survey have a margin of error of plus or minus 2% at a 95% confidence level.
The Yiaga survey is one of several efforts by civic organisations to monitor the electoral process in Nigeria and ensure that the elections are free, fair, and credible.
