Federal Government Releases 8-Month Allowance to Non-Academic Staff in Tertiary Institutions

In a move to maintain industrial harmony and prevent disruptions in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions, the Federal Government has released eight months’ arrears of the Consolidated Non-Academic Staff Tertiary Institutions Allowance (CONTA) to non-academic workers in federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. According to reports by Vanguard News and THISDAYLIVE, the payments aim to strengthen the ongoing industrial harmony and avoid any fresh crises. The reports did not specify when the arrears began accumulating, nor did they mention whether the payments were made to all non-academic staff members. The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has hailed the government’s decision, stating it would contribute to a more peaceful and productive academic environment. However, it remains unclear if this decision will appease all parties involved or if further discussions will be necessary.
