Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has come under fire from the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) over his administration’s decision to use diesel generators for streetlights and the refurbishment of the Lekan Salami Stadium. The APC camp is disturbed that the stadium, which was refurbished by Governor Makinde, failed to secure approval from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for Shooting Stars Sports Club to participate in continental fixtures.
According to a report by Premium Times Nigeria, Alli, an APC chieftain, claimed that the use of diesel-powered streetlights and the CAF-rejected stadium reflect Governor Makinde’s engineering incompetence. However, speaking with Punch Newspapers, Makinde’s Special Assistant on Communication and Strategy, Taiwo Adisa, defended the decision to use diesel generators for streetlighting, blaming the unreliable national grid supply from the APC government.
Adisa argued that the use of generators was necessary to ensure a stable power supply in Oyo State, as the national grid is often unstable. He also stated that the stadium’s failure to secure CAF approval was due to issues beyond their control, and that they are working to resolve them.
This controversy comes amid growing tensions between Governor Makinde and the APC camp ahead of the 2027 elections.
