On Monday, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar called on President Bola Tinubu, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, and the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, to provide answers over the death of 37 miners in Niger State. The miners were reportedly detained by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) before their demise. According to Vanguard News, Atiku Abubakar’s spokesperson, Phrank Shaibu, expressed concern over the incident, stating that it raises questions about the safety measures in place for miners and the government’s commitment to upholding their rights. The deaths have sparked outrage across Nigeria, with many questioning the authorities’ handling of illegal mining activities. As of now, neither Tinubu, Alake, nor Tunji-Ojo has publicly addressed the matter.
