Israeli MP Pushes for UN Resolution on Nnamdi Kanu’s Release

An Israeli Member of Parliament (MP), Emmanuel Ugwu-Nwogo, has made a bold move to seek a United Nations (UN) resolution advocating for the release of Nigerian separatist leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. This development comes amidst ongoing calls globally for the freedom of Kanu, who is currently serving a life sentence in Nigeria following his conviction by a court in the country.

According to THISDAYLIVE, Ugwu-Nwogo’s push stems from a recommendation made by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) in 2021. The WGAD had then called for Kanu’s immediate release, stating that his detention was arbitrary and contrary to international law.

The development is significant as it highlights ongoing global interest in the case of Nnamdi Kanu, a leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a separatist group advocating for the independence of Biafra – a region located in southeastern Nigeria. The IPOB’s demands have been met with controversy and conflict within Nigeria, leading to Kanu’s arrest and eventual conviction.

The move by Ugwu-Nwogo underscores the international attention and pressure being applied on the Nigerian government regarding Kanu’s case. It remains unclear when or if this UN resolution will be brought before the assembly, but it adds another layer to the ongoing global discourse surrounding Kanu’s detention.

Editorial notes: The story is based on a single source and further confirmation from the United Nations regarding the progress of the proposed resolution is needed.
